Speak up during, not after
If something is going in a direction you did not intend, say so while there is still hair to work with. Barbers would far rather adjust at the halfway point than hear at the end that you are unhappy.
"Can we go a bit shorter on the sides" mid-cut is easy. The same sentence after the cut is finished is not, because hair does not go back on.
Cancellations at a one-chair shop
This is where etiquette actually has teeth. A shop with six chairs can absorb a no-show. A single barber in a private suite cannot, and an empty slot on a weekday schedule that only runs 4:00 to 7:30 PM is a meaningful part of the day.
Twenty four hours notice is the courteous standard. If something comes up at short notice, a text is still far better than silence.
Small things that get noticed
- Keep your head still and upright. Looking down at a phone changes the angle of the whole cut.
- Say if you want to talk or not. Neither is rude and barbers read it either way.
- Rebook before you leave if you are on a cycle. It is the easiest way to keep the slot you want.
- Leave a review if you were happy. For a small shop it matters more than a tip does.
