Choosing a Service

What is a hot towel shave and is it worth it?

By Adrian Carranza, master barber ·

The short answer

A hot towel shave is a straight razor shave preceded by a hot, damp towel laid over the face for several minutes. The towel is not theater. Heat and moisture soften the keratin in facial hair and relax the follicle, which means the blade cuts the hair rather than tearing at it, and that difference is most of why a barbershop shave leaves less irritation than a rushed shave at home. At Adrian’s Barbershop in Goodyear, Arizona the hot towel and straight razor work are included in the $70 VIP Package alongside a haircut, skincare facial, and neck massage. A standalone razor finish on the neckline is also part of regular haircut and beard services. The whole sequence takes time by design: towel, pre-shave oil, lather, the shave itself in the direction of growth, then a cool towel and a calming finish to close the pores back down.

What happens, in order

  1. 1Hot towel laid over the face for two to three minutes to soften the hair and open the skin.
  2. 2Pre-shave oil worked in, which gives the blade something to glide on.
  3. 3Lather applied with a brush, which lifts the hair as much as it distributes the cream.
  4. 4First pass with the straight razor, following the direction of growth.
  5. 5Re-lather and a second pass on any area that needs it, often across the grain rather than against it.
  6. 6Cool towel to close the pores, then a calming balm without alcohol.

Why it beats shaving at home

Most home irritation comes from three things: shaving dry or nearly dry, going against the grain on the first pass, and using a multi-blade cartridge that lifts and cuts hair below the skin line.

A straight razor cuts at the surface rather than below it, which is why it produces fewer ingrown hairs. The trade is that it demands a steady hand and good preparation, which is exactly what the towel and oil provide.

Who should skip it

  • Active acne, open cuts, or a current skin flare-up. Wait until it settles.
  • Anyone on isotretinoin or similar, where skin is fragile. Ask your doctor first.
  • Severe razor bumps or folliculitis. A beard line up that leaves the neck alone is the better call.
  • If you are shaving daily already and your skin is chronically irritated, mention it before the blade comes out.

Is it worth it

As a routine every-week thing, probably not, and no barber will pretend otherwise. As something you do before an event, or once a month as the full reset, it is one of the few grooming services where the result is different from anything you can achieve at home.

The honest pitch is that you are paying for the preparation, not the blade. Anyone can drag a razor. The towel, the oil, the lather, and the fifteen minutes of not rushing are the service.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long does a hot towel shave last?+

The shave itself holds for a day or two depending on how fast you grow. The neckline and edge work from a razor finish stays sharp for roughly a week before it softens.

Can I get just a shave without the rest of the VIP Package?+

Razor work on the neckline and edges is included in the haircut and beard services. The full hot towel and straight razor sequence is part of the $70 VIP Package. Ask when booking and Adrian will tell you what fits the time you have.
